My Concealed Depression

Depression Resources

If you or someone you know needs help, call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. You can also text HOME to 741-741 for free, 24-hour support from the Crisis Text Line. Outside of the U.S., please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention for a database of resources.

Until I was hospitalized, I did not know how many resources were available to help me understand my depression. I have used many of these and found their help immeasurable.

Not only have I attended SMART Recovery meetings, but I also took their certifications to conduct meetings. I have read all of their books and watched some of their online videos. I also flew to Chicago last October and attended their 25th International Conference. I have learned so much from SMART, I hope you will take a look.”

SMART Recovery is the world’s largest community of mutual support group meetings that use science and self-empowerment to help people overcome addiction problems with drugs, alcohol, and harmful behavior such as gambling, over-eating, excessive shopping, and internet use. Meetings Proliferate to Help Individuals and Families Recover from Addiction Epidemic. Find Smart Recovery online at the link below.

The Wellness Recovery Action Plan® or WRAP®, is a self-designed prevention and wellness process that anyone can use to get well, stay well, and make their life the way they want it to be. It was developed in 1997 by a group of people who were searching for ways to overcome their own mental health issues and move on to fulfilling their life dreams and goals.  It is now used extensively by people in all kinds of circumstances, and by health care and mental health systems all over the world to address all kinds of physical, mental health, and life issues. I have personally used this and wholly recommend exploring this depression resource today.

Co-Occurring Disorders and Addiction

Also known as dual diagnosis or co-morbid disorders, co-occurring disorders are underlying mental health issues that appear alongside substance use disorders. Addiction and mental health have a very close relationship. Mental health disorders make it more likely that an individual will develop a substance use disorder, especially if these disorders are left untreated. On the flip side, substance abuse, especially at the level addiction level, greatly worsens the severity and frequency of most mental health issues.

 Depression and Drug Rehab

Because addiction and many mental health conditions have similar symptoms, proper diagnosis of either condition is often very difficult. Due to the difficulty in diagnosis, one disorder might be treated while the other is left undiagnosed, leaving the patient vulnerable to relapse or worsening mental health. Therefore, each diagnosis must be made and treated simultaneously.

Co-occurring disorders are tragically common. Approximately 7.9 million adults in the United States had co-occurring disorders in 2014.
